National deficit by month chart
The federal deficit for FY2021 will be $966 billion. It is the amount by which federal outlays in the federal budget exceed federal receipts. Source: OMB Historical Tables. These files contain the monthly receipts/outlays and deficit/surplus of the United States published in Table 1 of the Monthly Treasury Statement, for fiscal years 1981-2020. The figures reflect backdated adjustments and may be amended (monthly) based on agency reporting. You can measure the debt by a president by summing up his budget deficits. The president is responsible for his budget priorities. The deficit by president reveals how much deficit was in each year's budget. The terminology sounds similar, but a difference exists between the deficit and the debt by a president.
